Departure
Departure is a series of 25 wax monoprints on vellum, each 9 1/2 inches square. The title was promped by the fact that the imagery, suggestive of water or landscapes, represents an unusual direction for me. I did not set out to work in such a referential manner. I was interested in the cell-like pattern made by the wax as it simmered in the electric frypan. Limited by the size of the frypan, I laid one half of the vellum onto the surface of the wax and then the other. The resulting horizontal created a defacto landscape that is heightened by a pattern evocative of waves or rolling hills. I manipulated the print by letting the wax run as it cooled, and by overprinting, which partially melted the layer underneath. Could I have used a smaller sheet of paper? I did, and the result was Sift. I expect to spend more time exploring this terrain.
