Works on
Paper
I usually intersperse a series of paintings with a series of works
on paper. I like the change in rhythm and approach that working
on paper allows. Where painting is a marathon of molten wax, muscularity
and intensity, drawing is a sprint, a gambol, a leap. It's the spirited
exhale that comes after months of slow, deliberate concentration.
I can move lightly and energetically through a series of drawings,
jumping from idea to idea and connecting the dots (sometimes literally)
along the way. Actually, drawing is an imprecise word for my work,
because I don't use traditional drawing materials, such as pencil,
ink or pen. As in my painting, I create a layered mesh of medium
and pattern in a formal arrangement of line and dot inspired by
the grid. A series consisting of 24 to 40 works is about average
for me.
