The Uttar series is the
largest, most sustained
series I have ever made:
243 paintings and no end
in sight. The newest
paintings look vastly
different from the earlier
ones, yet there are strong
ties that connect them—
the inspiration, of course,
as well as saturated color,
layers of translucent and
semi-opaque color, and
my archeological
approach to image-
making, which is as much
about digging into the
surface as it is about
building it up.
