Vicolo
Vicolo is sculptural in a way that most of my other work is not. Vicolo (Italian for alley or narrow passage) would not exist were it not for its skived and riven surface. Much of each painting is hidden in layers, and only the act of dragging a metal tool across its surface reveals a hint of what is beneath. Sometimes I float new color into the vicoli; other times I revel in what I have exposed. Viewers have inevitably read landscape into the work, but this series is simply a formal exploration of color using yet another means.
